Boulder History Flood Reflections A story of strength and resilience the great boulder flood of 1894 remains one of the most powerful stories in boulder’s history. it was a moment of destruction, fear, and uncertainty, but also one of unity and strength. boulder rebuilt stronger, learned from the disaster, and set the foundation for the flood prepared, environmentally aware city we know today. Due to its location near the mouth of numerous canyons, the boulder area is a major flash flood risk. following are descriptions compiled by elizabeth black of some of the flash floods that have occurred in the region beginning with the flood of 1894.

Boulder History Flood Reflections Boulder is no stranger to floods. in fact, it is one of colorado's most flood vulnerable communities. the city is situated at the mouth of a canyon, and the boulder creek flows through the middle of town. according to weather historian christopher c. burt, floods pummeled boulder in 1894, 1896, 1906, 1909, 1916, 1921, 1938, and 1969. Boulder history museum – flood reflections “quick and dirty” 2 week pop up exhibit featuring images and reflections from the community 1 year after historic floods swept through the community. Continuing to learn and be aware of the science and historical significance of flooding will keep boulder as a city as well as its individuals prepared to bounce back from any flooding instances to come. From sept. 11 to 15, 2013, the city of boulder and communities across the front range experienced significant rainfall that led to flooding, loss of life and widespread damage. ten years later, we reflect on the strength of our community and the work we've done to prepare for future floods. South boulder creek (sbc) contributes substantially to the city's flood hazard. four floodplain studies have been completed for sbc since 1969, producing varying flood frequency estimates and, thus, large uncertainties in flood frequency (e.g., the 100 year flood varied from 122 to 223 m3 s). Carnegie library for local history offers walk in hours on thursdays and saturdays, 12pm 5pm. appointments are also available and can be scheduled online. basic research and scanning services may be requested by emailing [email protected].
