The advent of biobased polymers that are both biodegradable and renewable provides a green alternative to petroleum based plastics; however, there are limitations and concerns with the current life cycle of biodegradable biobased polymers that need to be addressed before widespread adoption. To create bigger molecules, they are made up of monomeric components that are covalently connected in chains. biopolymers fall into three primary categories: polynucleotides, polypeptides, and polysaccharides. Instead, bio based polymers can be categorized based on their source, process technique, and formulation following the classification shown in figure 1 [7].

Therefore, this chapter shows examples of biobased polymers used in the biomedical area, more precisely in the area of tissue engineering, drug delivery and other biomedical applications. Biodegradability studies are therefore crucial in order to assess the long term environmental impact of such materials. this review presents a brief overview of the different classes of bio based polymers, with a strong focus on vegetable oil derived resins and pla. Rubber, starch, cellulose, proteins and dna, rna, chitin, and peptides are some of the examples of natural biopolymers. biopolymers are a diverse and remarkably versatile class of materials.
