Bilateral Partnerships Eumetsat Eumetsat has established cooperation agreements with agencies around the world covering the exchange of data and scientific expertise and more. these agreements directly benefit the national meteorological and hydrological services in our member states, as well as our international partners. Mercator ocean international and the european organisation for the exploitation of meteorological satellites (eumetsat) have signed a landmark partnership agreement to strengthen and expand their long standing cooperation in satellite based ocean observation, climate forecasting, and sustainable resource management.

Eumetsat is an intergovernmental organisation and was founded in 1986. our purpose is to supply weather and climate related satellite data, images and products – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – to the national meteorological services of our member and cooperating states in europe, and other users worldwide. This led to a bilateral agreement between eumetsat and noaa for an initial joint polar system (ijps) covering the midmorning and early afternoon orbits with free and open data access in near real time for the global user community. Dr. chen zhenlin expressed that for over 20 years, the two sides have conducted in depth cooperation by technical workshops, bilateral meetings and high level exchanges.

Under this agreement, eumetsat and the nsoas exchange data from their respective oceanography programmes, adding chinese altimeter, radiometer, and scatterometer data to eumetsat’s portfolio of third party data. Together with esa, the european space agency, and ecmwf, the european centre for medium range weather forecasts, eumetsat is involved in the eu initiative destination earth to create digital twins of the entire earth system. This agreement is expected to provide a framework for stronger collaboration between the government of canada and eumetsat, particularly related to meteorological satellites and their data.
