This quilt was made by mrs. deputy's third grade class of j. wilbur haley elementary school as a united states bicentennial project in 1976. it features four rows of 5 1 4 inch squares. July 1976 was a big deal with the bi centennial of the founding of the united states. the historical society created this quilt and also spent three years recording interviews, primarily conducted by jett schmelz and dianne thompson. The sheer scale of these projects is hard to wrap your head around. some quilts were so large they couldn't be displayed in standard galleries. they needed gymnasiums. they needed specialized lighting. and more importantly, they needed climate control that most museums in 1976 weren't really prepared to handle. The materials in this collection document the preparations, financial arrangements, and special programs planned and celebrated at the dekalb county centennial (1934), dekalb city centennial (1956), dekalb county’s celebration of the u.s. bicentennial (1974 1977), and the dekalb city sesquicentennial (2006).
