Attica Prison Cell Block Attica was the site of a prison uprising in september 1971 in which inmates took control of the prison for several days. they were seeking to negotiate to improve conditions and treatment at the overcrowded prison. It was january 2006, and josef kirk fischl was tucked away behind a 30 foot high gray wall in c block, one of attica correctional facility’s toughest cellblocks.

Cells were also a big problem in attica. the cells were crammed with “a bed, a toilet, and a basin,” which “barely left enough room for a man to move around”, and any inmate spent 15 to 24 hours in a cell per day (9). the cells in each block varied as well. There are hundreds of images in the archive, including many autopsy photos of prisoners and guards murdered during the retaking of d yard. due to the overwhelming amount of evidence, it is not possible for one person to properly explore or expose the full scope of the information.
