Arecibo Message Classroom Activities Cs4fn The arecibo message was sent by a very high frequency radio wave, inaudible to human ears. try your hand at decoding a human audible version of part of the message you’ll need to access the sound files at the link above. In this series of expanding classroom activities (more to come!) we’ve created a colouring in pixel puzzle, a quiz and you can try and listen to an audible version of one row from the message to see how well you can decode it, and make sense of it. It includes a mixture of pictures (such as the human figure, in red, and the shape of the arecibo telescope, at the bottom, in purple) and coded information about maths, chemistry and physics, represented in binary code. In november 1974 frank drake and pals (including carl sagan) used the arecibo antenna to ping, via radiowaves, a 1,679 bit sound message into space. the sound consisted of two notes at two different pitches: one for 1s, one for 0s.
