Arctic Sea Ice Minimum Volumes 1979 2025
Minimum Arctic Sea Ice Extent 1979 2025 Srm360 The animated map shows the minimum size of the arctic sea ice measured each year since 1979, based on satellite observations with the graph of year to year changes overlayed. Note: 2025 is preliminary. our content relies on a range of sources. when citing this infographic, please also cite the underlying sources where applicable. this infographic can be cited as follows: srm360 (2025) – "minimum arctic sea ice extent, 1979 2025" [infographic].
Arctic Sea Ice Minimum Volumes 1979 2013 Climate State Sea ice volume is calculated using the pan arctic ice ocean modeling and assimilation system (piomas, zhang and rothrock, 2003) developed at apl psc. anomalies for each day are calculated relative to the average over the 1979 2025 period for that day of the year to remove the annual cycle. Time series showing arctic sea ice volume for every february from 1901 to 2010 using piomas 20c and from 1979 to 2026 using piomas v2.1. thin dashed lines using a lowess smoothing fit are shown for each ice ocean reanalysis dataset. This collection includes monthly maps showing sea ice concentration during the month of the arctic summer minimum extent, dating back to the start of the satellite record in 1979. On september 10, arctic sea ice likely reached its annual minimum extent of 4.60 million square kilometers (1.78 million square miles). the 2025 minimum shares the tenth lowest spot in the nearly 47 year satellite record with 2008 and 2010.

Time series representations of annual maximum, mean and minimum sea ice extents in the arctic ocean (including the sea of okhotsk and the bering sea) and the antarctic ocean from 1979 to 2025. After the annual minimum in september 2024, extent increased more slowly than average through mid october, particularly in the beaufort and chukchi seas on the pacific side of the arctic, as well as in the barents and kara seas on the atlantic side. Now in 4k resolution and 60 fps! latest visualization of the startling decline of arctic sea ice, showing the minimum volume reached every september since 1979. Arctic sea ice minima from 1979 to 2025 according to the osi saf sea ice index (lavergne et al., 2023). the minimum sea ice extent is taken to be the lowest 5 day average.
