Animate Materials Resources Royal Society We want to create a repository of ideas for future applications of animate materials so that researchers can curate a ‘library of future materials’, identify characteristics that are desirable and have real social benefit, and spot ones that could pose challenges in the future. Development and implementation of proto animate materials are currently being pursued in many disciplines, but without any formal co ordination. the royal society is seeking to support interdisciplinary efforts in the field of animate materials, as well as to improve understanding of their potential, while identifying steps needed to accelerate. A collaboration with the theatre company cap a pie, funded by the royal society of chemistry has brought performances, workshops and free teaching resources about animate materials to key stage 2 (upper primary aged) children across a number of northeast schools throughout 2022 2023. The royal society will be hosting an event as part of british science week discussing the future of animate materials. the event will be held virtually at 6pm on wednesday 10 march. Thanks to the outreach fund from the royal society of chemistry, we were able to create a workshop series combining science, drama and learning in role in a fictional immersive experience. In this article, i investigate a research question that incorporates many of these magnalia naturae while, at the same time, going further than any of them, since it refers directly to the possibility of creating life artificially from inanimate matter.
