While both ridley scott's original "alien" and james cameron's "aliens" remain unimpeachable classics, the third entry is a bit more divisive. it was director david fincher's feature debut and. Alien 3 was not considered a success at the domestic (north american) box office, and was critically bashed, and the public did not respond well to its somewhat depressing storyline. The production of "alien 3" had problems beyond directorial conflict, not least of which begin with the fact that the script wasn't even completed by the time production began in early january. Upon completion, the studio dismantled and reworked it without fincher's consent, including releasing a teaser trailer that suggested the film would take place on earth. the film was released to mixed reviews, but was a commercial success.
