Album Review Garrett Owen S Memoriam Embraces Chaos No Depression
Album Review Garrett Owen S Memoriam Embraces Chaos No Depression For an album that is about embracing chaos, the music and lyrics on memoriam are tightly controlled. much like juni ata’s saudade or fancy hagood’s recent album american spirit, owen joins a renewed movement of marrying folk sounds with pop. Garrett owen’s guiding force on memoriam seems to be: expect the unexpected. owen spent five painstaking years writing this album – the majority of which were devoted to end of life care for his grandmother, who lived her last few years with dementia.
Memoriam Garrett Owen As you’ve no doubt gathered by now, this is not a cheerful album. neither is it a cry in your beer, navel gazing experience. sure, there’s some angst and melancholy. instead of wallowing in it, garrett owen sets it all to gorgeous acoustic arrangements that leave you richer for the experience. For his third and most personal album, singer songwriter garrett owen remembers his beloved elders. after relocating to keller from dallas in 2020 to care for his aging grandmother, garrett owen recorded what may be his most personal work yet. Memoriam is his third album and consists of tales of people in the memory as well as musings and personal reflections. as an opener, “beautiful stain” captures the attention of the listeners and also introduces a new musical side to the artist. Drawing from his experiences taking care of his late grandmother, garrett owen's 'memoriam' sees the artist looking back on his life and relationships, making sense of the ripple effect of loss.
