Consciousness in ai systems can be evaluated using the indicator properties derived from neuro scientific theories of consciousness. these indicators can help assess the level of consciousness present in existing ai systems. This report argues for, and exemplifies, a rigorous and empirically grounded approach to ai consciousness: assessing existing ai systems in detail, in light of our best supported neuroscientific theories of consciousness. We argue that the association between consciousness and the computer algorithms used today (primarily large language models, llms), as well as those that would be invented in the foreseeable.

This manuscript reviews and critically compares major theories of consciousness, with a particular emphasis on awareness, attention, and the sense of self. A sufficiently advanced global workspace ai could functionally mimic human consciousness by coordinating multiple streams of information processing. despite these possibilities, there remains a hard problem of consciousness —how subjective experience arises from physical or computational processes.
