Level 2 on abstracting the landscape. as you found out, landscape painting can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. nature is a fantastic subject for those just starting out with painting. however, the challenge is the abundance of detail as you found out in part 1.
Abstracting The Landscape Mark Bowles Trained realists have a hard time doing simple things! we overcomplicate a piece of fruit, so when it comes to the landscape, we have to be taught how to simplify. what we have done so far is break it down into values and shapes. at this point, we can start assigning color to those shapes. Having recently come off a weekend devoted to abstracting the landscape (see previous post), during which we painted from photograph, imagination, memory, music and purely abstract concepts, i resolved to apply my newly acquired abstracting skills to actual landscapes. At one point in my photographic career, i began to feel a lack of creativity when i was just replicating familiar landscapes. as a result, i began to familiarize myself with abstract art; visiting galleries online, listening to curators, and reading books.
