Digital Ecologies

Digital Ecologies Digital ecologies align approaches from more than human geography, digital geography, political ecology, and media studies, developing three key themes to guide future research in this emerging field: materialities, encounters, and governance. In an era of mass extinction, climate emergency, and biodiversity collapse, what role might digital media play in securing liveable futures across species.

About Digital Ecologies Digital ecologies is an interdisciplinary and international research group fostering critical conversations at the interface of more than human and digital geographies, political ecology, digital humanities, and media studies to understand the mediation of more than human worlds. Combining approaches from more than human and digital geographies as well as media studies, this introductory chapter proffers ‘digital ecologies’ as an analytical framework for examining digitally mediated more than human worlds. Combining approaches from more than human and digital geographies, we proffer ‘digital ecologies’ as an analytical framework for examining digitally mediated human–nonhuman entanglement. In this paper, we describe how cross mediality and bridge experiences are playing a major role in redefining the goals and scope of information architecture as a strategic practice and discipline.

Digital ecologies describe the intertwined relationship between digital technologies, human activity, and the earth’s natural systems. the environmental footprint of digital technology is substantial and growing. Online and offline observations of digital and analogue technologies and practices will shed light on the diverse material relations and myriad ways of knowing forest. Framing the issue from a sociotechnical standpoint, the authors explore how engagement with digital media is shaped by socioeconomic status (taking into account confounding factors, such as race and ethnicity, and social and geographical ecologies).
