Adrian Frith Developer Mapmaker Data Guy Etc I’m a software developer by profession, with a particular interest in geographical data and mapping. i currently work as the software architect for the democratic alliance. this is my blog where i write (occasionally) about things that take my interest. Five years ago, after the 2014 general election, i built an interactive map of the election results. since then the state of the technology for web mapping has moved on, so i’ve developed a completely new version.

Adrian Frith Developer Mapmaker Data Guy Etc These are some personal projects i’ve worked on lately. statistics south africa doesn’t make census data available on the web for the so called “main places” and “subplaces”, which correspond to cities, towns, suburbs and villages. so i developed a website to share some of the basic demographic information about these places. Inspired by bill rankin’s “chicago boundaries”, and having finally obtained a copy of the small area data from census 2011, i decided to draw some similar dot maps showing how the population is distributed in south african cities. As “the data guy” for the democratic alliance, naturally my job involves working with election result data. this post is a collection of mildly interesting facts i’ve learned about the 2014 elections in the course of my work. Recently i’ve developed a graphql api to make that data available to other developers. in parallel with this api development, i’ve also added some extra data, and made some changes to the website. read on for more details.
