Unlike mainstream psychiatry, which often treats voices as pathological phenomena requiring suppression, the hvm encourages voice hearers to engage with their voices, seeking to understand their origins, context, and messages. This chapter considers the promise of epigenetics in the context of the phenomenon of voice hearing and the question of how to account for the links between voice hearing, trauma and abuse.
