The truth here is that when you add a shared folder to your account, the folder will take up space in your account as well, not just the owner's. Since you only need view/download access, though, the owner of the folder can send you a "view-only" link instead, which won't affect your available space at all. Accessing files in the Dropbox folder is extremely slow due to updates .... It doesn't clean up keys linked to its previous version, so every query loops through leftover keys that are useless or non-existent.
